Most biology exam marks are not for knowing that beta-galactosidase exists; they are for explaining what happens next. A useful biology quiz asks about sequence (what has to happen before RNA polymerase can transcribe), location (stroma or thylakoid, cytoplasm or matrix), regulation (what switches a pathway on and off) and consequence (what a mutation or an inhibitor would do). The quality of those questions depends on what you give it. If your notes only list terms, you will get term questions. If they spell out the steps, the conditions and at least one worked example of a knockout or a disease, you will get questions that make you reason through the pathway, like the lacI mutant question in the example below.
Cell biology and biochemistry: include the inputs and outputs of each stage (glycolysis, link reaction, Krebs cycle, electron transport chain) and where each happens, so questions can test whether you know what feeds into what. Genetics: include a worked cross or pedigree in words, the definitions of dominant, recessive and codominant, and any mutation examples from your course. Physiology: include the feedback loop in full, stimulus, receptor, control centre, effector and response, because negative-feedback questions are where most students lose marks.
Diagrams are the one thing the tool cannot read as diagrams. If a photo of your notes has a labelled drawing of a nephron or a synapse, the labels will be transcribed as text but the arrows and spatial layout will not. Write one or two sentences describing the flow (for example, filtrate moves from Bowman's capsule to the proximal convoluted tubule, where glucose is reabsorbed) and the quiz will be able to test it.
Every question comes with a short explanation drawn from your text. When you get one wrong, read the explanation before looking at the next question and ask whether you missed a fact or misunderstood the mechanism. Missing a fact is fixed with flashcards; misunderstanding a mechanism usually means redrawing the pathway from memory and checking it against your notes, then generating a fresh quiz on just that section.

Hard favours application and contrasts between closely related ideas, such as mitosis versus meiosis or competitive versus non-competitive inhibition, which is closer to what longer exam questions demand.
One topic per quiz works best, for example a single pathway or one organ system, up to about 3,000 words. A whole chapter covering several unrelated topics spreads the questions thin, so you get one or two per topic instead of enough to show whether you really understand any of them.
